I am using Macbook Pro Mid 2012 13' with 128GB SSD. The latest installed version of OS X was El Capitan which crashed during a Sierra upgrade.

Trying to install Mac OS X El Capitan on SSD. I am trying to install El Capitan on an ssd for another mac. I am using my girlfriends current MacBook Air 2017. Since I had so much trouble with a usb boot drive, I decided to install El Capitan directly onto the ssd (by using a usb to SATA adapter) then put it into the iMac.

• Once downloaded, I was prompted to install El Capitan, I clicked yes, and it installed. Note: For detailed instructions on installing OS X to a new drive, click HERE. In this example’s instructions, a newer Mac was used, and it would and did call “Home” for the latest available OS which was then downloaded and installed.
• Apple recently released its latest operating system for its Macintosh lineup of systems, OS X 10.11 El Capitan, which, as all the recent previous versions of OS X have been, is free for all users to download and install. El Capitan offers many improvements and refinements to the OS X experience, such as better window management, enhanced.
• I downloaded El Capitan from the 'App Store' and then used 'DiskMaker X 5' to make a bootable usb. Restarted my laptop and booted from USB, and onto the El Capitan installation. From there I formatted the new SSD (MacOS Extended (Journaled) with a single GUID partition).

Internet recovery mode worked somehow to land me to install download and install a new OS but it's Mountain Lion, which came installed when I bought the Macbook few years back However, it's rejecting to install on current SSD drive as shown in pic.

I have another 320GB HDD, so is this the only way to reinstall? First I do a fresh install of Lion on the external HDD? What I should I do?

What is a step by step procedure as all I want to do is run OSX on SSD drive but keeping all my older data. I can not afford to wipe it.

However, I did back up some of its backup onto my PC. If I install Lion the HDD can I then download Sierra and create an install disk to update/fix/install corrupted OS X on SSD?

After I got my new MBP, I decided to sell my old 2010 MBP. I wanted to keep all my existing data on my old laptop, so I decided to swap out its SSD and to put in a brand new one.

The process of installing Yosemite on the new SSD was not as straightforward as I would have liked. I thought I’d blog about it to help anyone else who needed to do the same.

Basically I was trying to sell a 2010 MBP with a new SSD, with Yosemite installed but not configured.

1. Download Yosemite installation from the App store. It might complain that you already have it installed but download it anyway. It will be downloaded to /Applications and be named Install OS X Yosemite.app
2. Create a bootable image from the Yosemite installer on a USB stick larger than 6GB. In a terminal run:

where MyVolume is the name of your USB stick. Change this to match the name of your USB stick.

3. Physically install SSD into the target laptop.
4. Insert the Yosemite USB stick into the target laptop and power up. (This might take a while.)
5. When the menu finally turns up, choose Disk Utility and format the SSD as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with a unique name.
6. Once complete, exit from Disk Utility and return the main menu.
7. Choose to Install OS X on the formatted SSD.
8. Follow the prompts until Yosemite is installed.
